_log.ldf - files

Hello,
Sometimes files that end with _log.ldf are left in the same directory as the
.ldf and .mdf-files of a SQL Server database file.
When this happens, the SQL Server files cannot be deleted, unless the
computer is booted up again.
What is the meaning of those files and how can they be removed without
having to reboot the computer?

your databases (database propertities) for the name(s) you are seeing.

Every database has at least an *.mdf and *.ldf files. If you delete a
database's ldf file, then you can not open that database again.

[SUGGESTION] Upload reports as ZIP file

I have around 200 reports, and it is overkill to upload them to server
file by file. So I suggest, man could pack them to ZIP and upload one
ZIP file, or I am missing something ?

the Report Server. You can do it more or less automatically with a script.

you should, it is very powerful app designed exactly for this.
Importing (deploying) is quite slow, but it is faster and more correct
as doing by hand.

This is driving me nuts. I posted the other day on a related issue, which I belive turned out to be a file permission. I am trying to test my asp.net site under IIS before deploying it. I am now getting the above message which breaks on the opening page on opening a connection to the sql server database. I have permissions set on the database for MachineName\ASPNET and NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE as Ken Tucker suggested. Still getting the message. This certainly looks like a sqlserver permission issue but I am at a loss as to how to grant IIS or the specific web app permission to access the database.

Any assistance is truely appreciated. I have spent way to many hours on this. If you don't have the answer but can suggest a resource where I can research it that would help also.

I asked because I had a similar situation and what I did was to go to SQL Server Enterprise Manager, navigate down to the database I was using, and then to its "users" tab, and for the ASPNET user, I right clicked and set the all the permissions to Insert, Update, Delete, Select and Execute. I dont know if you already done this or not. If not, you can give this a try.

Also, if you know your application is not going to do any inserts or updates to the database then I would suggest you try with minimal permissions (probably only Select). This will make your database less vulnerable.

Re: Accessing the underlying sql query from the rdl file

Our client uses the report builder to generate reports for collection of employees. We would like to use the employee records in this report to perform some additional processing (such as the list of employees gets assigned to a particular group).

Programmatically, I can retrieve a byte stream from rs.GetReportDefinition( "\myClientEmpReport") and deserialize the stream into Report object (as define by ReportDefinition.xsd).

I can then manually drill down and retrieve the SematicQuery xml from the commandText field.

The problem is how to convert the SemanticQuery format into a T-Sql query that I can run against the view that the report model is based off of.

Is this possible?

P.S. Running SQL 2005 Reporting Services, VC# 2005, ASP.Net 2.0.

After attempting to autogenerate serialization classes on the SemanticQuery xml with Xsd and XsdObjectGen, I ended up hand coding some classes that handled recursion. From there, I was able to regenerate the sql query by walking through the filter and grouping sections. While this isn't a generic solution, it works well for my needs because the model I need this for is a single datasource derived from a view.

As a feature request, it sure would be nice to be able get the query string from the reporting engine directly.

I am trying to execute a simple sql file thru ant task. The file is:

use [centivaTest]
GO

However I get the errror message:
[sql] Failed to execute: use [centivaTest] GO

So I changed the file to:

use [centivaTest] ;
GO

as ant treats ';' as a delimiter. However another erro message
appears:

[mssql][ant] Failed to execute: GO

Do you know how to execute my simple sql statements thru ant (or
generally what wrong am I doing)?

GO isn't understood by SQL Server: it's used as a batch delimiter for isql,
osql, and QA. I'm not an ant expert, but a few choices I see are:

- Have ant execute your SQL file via osql.

- Removed unnecessary GO's and/or manually break your script into separate
scripts (since that's what GO does anyway).

I'm trying to connect to a tab-delimited text file using the ODBC data access. I set it up using Administrative Tools - Data Sources (ODBC) from the start menu, and clicked the 'Guess' button under Define Format.

The schema it created looks like this:

[cims_output_data.txt]
ColNameHeader=True
Format=TabDelimited
MaxScanRows=0
CharacterSet=OEM
Col1=SIMNAME
Col2=TIMESTAMP
Col3=SIMTYPE
Col4=REGION
Col5=SECTOR
....etc.

It looks OK, but if I go back to Define in Administrative Tools and try to review it, I get a similar error message:

Ini File (or Registry) C:\Program Files\CIMS\schema.ini is corrupt.
Section: cims_output_data.txt, Key: Col1.

Has anyone seen this before? There is nothing on MSDN as far as I could find. I read on another forum that if you replace the label 'Col1' with 'Col' the problem is solved but it still reports that the schema is corrupt when I try to open it in Administrative Tools.

work, however if I try and run using xp_cmdshell I receive the error.
Both SQLAgent and MSSQL services have access to the directory/file|||When you are running it from EM, the package will use your logon to
determine the right and security to access a file but this will not be the
case when running it from a service (xp_cmdshell, DTS_Run or any other
service like SQL-Agent).
Also, if you are not using a UNC pathway but a drive letter (such as C:\);
many of these drive letters will be unknown to system accounts and other
accounts other than your own login. If you have used a driver letter, you
should replace with its full UNC name.

You don't say what the service accounts are. The LOCALSYSTEM will not
have access to network resources, so it would have to be a domain
account. Try logging in as this account and run the package from the
command prompt.

If you manually run the command from a command prompt does it work?
If xp_cmdshell is running from a job, then make sure service accounts
have access to the directory/file.

[help] SSIS File Configuration (XML)

We are deploying our SSIS packages into different folders. For example:
\Test1
\test2
\production

Test1 points to the Test1 database, etc.

So, I configured my SSIS package to use a database connection called dbMAIN.

I then setup the SSIS File Configuration (XML) so that "dbMain" points to Test1. This xml file, called Global.dtsConfig, sits in C:\test1\, the same place as my ssis.dtsx file.

I want to copy my dtsx file and my dtsconfig file into \test2 and \production. The problem is that the the location of dtsconfig is HARDCODED in the ssis package!

How do I dynamically change it?

I tried to hardcode the location to ".\Global.dtsconfig", but that did not work! Please advise!I found the solution. When you call an executable, you can use the /ConfigFile option. Example:

dtexec.exe /file "d:\myFile.dtsx" /configfile "d:\test1\Test1.dtsconfig"

When myfile.dtsx is run, it will use the test1.dtsconfig file to get all of its configurations.

you can export the structure of your database with your .sql file (Script of Database Objects) and for that you don't need .mdf/.ldf files. But in case you wants to attach your database to sql server you require .mdf and .ldf.

Security to network shares is dependent on the user who is running the package. If you are running it yourself, make sure you have permissions to the share. If you are running it from SQL Agent, you might need to use a proxy account (search for SQL Agent Proxy in Books Online) to access it.

More or less what it says - you have a column that is not used by downstream component.

So the data flow issues a warning that it might be better to just remove this column to save buffer space. Of course it is just optimization warning and can be ignored, but if you want maximum performance do pay attention to such warnings.

I'm creating a small device application using visual studio.NET 2003. Is it possible to get a sql server ce database file (.sdf) that i created at the pocket pc emulator to my desktop pc ?
If that's possible, then can you tell me how to do that ?

Yes, you sure can copy this file (e.g. by using file explorer on emulator and network drive on PC). But you can't use it on desktop.

I don't have a plan to use it on desktop, I just want to copy the .sdf file from emulator to desktop, then to the real pocket pc

This error occurs when the ActiveX task tries to execute:

[ActiveX Script Task] Error: Retrieving the file name for a component failed with error code 0x001B6438.

Anybody know how to troubleshoot these errors? I can't find anything on this error code. The same script works in DTS.

I have got the same error, the code is different but couldn't figure out what to do...|||

This isn't much of an answer but it is true: you should try to move away from the ActiveX Script Task and use the Script Task instead.

I tryed a different thing: I moved all the script from a SSIS task to a SQL Server job (a job with one "activeX script" step).

It sounds great, but I have a different error in the step that says that
"The command script does not destroy all the objects that it creates. Revise the command script. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 14277)"

I am not a VB programmer, so I think I have to ask someone to revise the script.

It does not matter whether the string is just part of a character expression such as: sTemp = "..... createobject( ...."; whether it appears in a comment or whether it is used to actually create an object. Any combination of the above that puts "createobject(" in the script more than once will cause the 14277 error to appear when you try to close the Job modifier.

There is a trick that I have found to overcome this. That is, to create any and all objects in a single common subroutine. Even in this subroutine, you have to trick the system into thinking that you have just destroyed the object that you are trying to create.

The subroutine is cobj. It takes the variable that will become the object and a string that defines the activex control. The "set ... = Nothing" that appears after the "Exit Sub" is the trick that makes the system think that the object is destroyed within the scope of cobj. Note: be sure to destroy the object in the scope where the object variable was defined.

Here is a code sample that sends an email using ASPMAIL, which contains data from an ADO SQL query.
