[Table Partitioning] What is the best method?

Hello,

I have a Sql Server 2005 database with many tables, each with millions of records within them.

They all have a Receive Date field, with records going back 10 years or so.

What would be the best way to partition it? I was thinking of partitioning them by years, but that would give me 10+ partitions -- would that be alot of overhead?

Are these tables transactional, or do you only read from them? If you are only reading, then you can add appropriate indexes without worrying about hurting insert/update/delete perf (because you don't do any inserts/updates/deletes) and don't partition them at all.

In my job I work with tables in sql server that have 100's of millions of rows without problems (not transactional though) - the important thing is to make sure the indexes are correct. also you need decent disks of course. :)|||Hello,

I have only tested functions/ schemes in 2005, but from my testing and reading I havent seen anything that would indicate 10 would be too many. Test it out. You need to realize that this whole concept/ feature is new to 2005, so you are blazing the path for the rest of us to follow. ;)

[SBS2003 Premium R2] Reporting services problem

Hi!
When I try configure report data source to connect to database on another
SQL Server 200 i receive message:
The feature: "Remote access to report data sources and/or the report server
database" is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services.
What can I do with thiss message?
Please help me

If you are running SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (w/Advanced
Services), this is one of the limitations. Otherwise, you will want to
open the local SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool and select
Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections -> View by
Instance -> MSSQLSERVER (or the local instance name) -> Database
Engine -> Remote Connections and make sure that it is set to: Local
and remote connections. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately it doesn't work, i already have remote connections selected,
SQL server 2000 on other computer is Standard Edition and i can connect
remotely from other applications.
Have you any idea?

[ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout Error

Hi,
I receive this intermmitent "[ODBC SQL Server Driver]
Timeout Error" eventhough i have set the Query Timeout in
Enterprise Manager to '0' (unlimited). However when
running the query in Query Analyser, it returns a result
in just a few seconds.
Is there someplace else that i need to change the timeout
setting? Or is there some other reason that this error
occasionally comes out?
Any help is much appreciated, thx!!
JaclynWhen it's intermittent, it can often be related to activity
on the server at the time the query is running. You'd want
to check locking, blocking and also check for data, log file
size changes that can contribute to timeouts (e.g. with
autogrow, autoshrink, manually growing or shrinking files)

When it's intermittent, it can often be related to activity
on the server at the time the query is running. You'd want

[Microsoft][ODBC Text Driver] error

Hello,
I am trying to import test file into a SQL Server 2000 database. If I
run the dts package manually I do not receive any errors. However when
I try and attempt to run the same package with dtsrun I receive the
following error.
Error string: [Microsoft][ODBC Text Driver] '(unknown)' is not a
valid path. Make sure that the path name is spelled
correctly and that you are connected to the server on which the file
resides
The path of the file is set correctly in the ODBC connection. Any
insight or assistance would be imprecated.

Are you running DTSRun from a command prompt?
Why are you using a DSN?
Have you tried creating the package using the Import Wizard?

If you manually run the command from a command prompt does it work?
If xp_cmdshell is running from a job, then make sure service accounts
have access to the directory/file.

Thanks, If I manually run the command from the command prompt it does
work, however if I try and run using xp_cmdshell I receive the error.
Both SQLAgent and MSSQL services have access to the directory/file|||When you are running it from EM, the package will use your logon to
determine the right and security to access a file but this will not be the
case when running it from a service (xp_cmdshell, DTS_Run or any other
service like SQL-Agent).
Also, if you are not using a UNC pathway but a drive letter (such as C:\);
many of these drive letters will be unknown to system accounts and other
accounts other than your own login. If you have used a driver letter, you
should replace with its full UNC name.

Hi
You don't say what the service accounts are. The LOCALSYSTEM will not
have access to network resources, so it would have to be a domain
account. Try logging in as this account and run the package from the
command prompt.
John|||I am using a domain account that has access to the file. I am using
the [ODBC Text Driver] which does not allow you to use a UNC in the
pathway.

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver] Invalid cursor stateevery time I save in enterprise ma

Hi,
every time I save after a change in any table through enterprise nmanager
I receive this error:
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver] Invalid cursor state
If I generate a script instead-of saving directly
and if I execute this script through the query analyzer all works fine!
My windows 2003 is english
my SQL Server is french
my default language is french
I've found the same error on another server which is in the same config.
any idea?

Okay, so is there something especially painful about learning them? It
certainly can't HURT you to have this knowledge; surely someday you will
have to connect to SQL Server without using a GUI as a crutch...|||There are different combinations of service packs that lend
themselves to having this error more often - e.g between
8.00.0859 and 8.00.0875 you can get the error more often,
version 8.00.0927 or no SP3 version 8.00.0194 you don't,
etc.
The bottom line is what Aaron keeps telling you - you should
be using Query Analyzer for this type of thing. It was
designed more for this type of activity.

Hi All,
A strange thing has been happening for a month or so when I retrive data via
QA. Sometimes the queries fail to run and I receive the following error
messages.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Protocol error in TDS stream
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]TDS buffer length too large
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Unknown token received from SQL Server
Re-reunning the query does not help only if I re-connect to the server. I
have checked Books Online and the only info is the following.
'The TDS stream from the server is invalid. This error is typically caused
by a problem on the server. Check the SQL Server error log.'
To tell you the truth I have not found anything suspicious.
Could you help me with it? Any help is welcome.

Make you have applied the latest service packs. You also
need to apply the service packs on the client where you run
Query Analyzer.

[DBNETLIB] General Network Error - (I have included the event log dump.)

I have a MS MSDE 2000 database that is serving 3 database clients. Intermittently, randomly, and more important daily, my clients receive a "SQL Database Connection Error", and they are kicked out of the database. This appears to be correlated when they are writing/retrieving a record.

MS MSDE then writes the following error in it's event log.

Any help, suggestions, or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. This is for a small business line of business application that is critical for everyday business operations. These problems have resulted in lost work, short tempers, and a just frank frustration.

MarkBasically this means that there is a "connection problem" between the client and server parts of the SQL Server software. The error isn't specific because there are way too many places for these kinds of problems to hide, most of which can't be found by the machine that notices the problem.

If the people are having regular network problems (slowness, problems reaching specific machines in their networks, web browsing issues, etc), then fixing those problems should also fix the SQL problem.

If they aren't having regular network problems, then you have to play a bit of Sherlock Holmes to track down the culprit. If I were in this situation, I'd check:

1. Visit the Windows Update site from each machine using SQL. Be sure to get the latest windows and driver patches.
2. Ping the database server from each machine, investigate any significant differences in ping times.
3. Check the Network Interface Card in each machine (including the server)
4. Check the network hardware (routers, etc)
5. Come back here if that doesn't help.
